In 1961, A local businessman Carter Brown wanted to bring a piece of the homeland to Holland to commemorate the dutch history of the town. After Carter was able to get a $450,000 dollar authorization of revenue bonds, they were able to deconstruct an authentic windmill from the Netherlands and then ship it over to the U.S. and then reconstruct it on what is now Windmill Island. Windmill Island soon became one of, if not the, biggest tourist destination in Holland. Every year during Tulip Time the island plays host to many different events as well as the site of a halloween hayride.
