Saginaw and the lumber industry

Martha Hay was a true pioneer of her time.  She was born November 7 1847 in Dixboro Michigan.  She moved to Elm Hall Michigan where she met her first husband.  They married on December 13 of 1864.  Sadly her husband died in 1881 but he bequeathed her his share of the lumber company.  This is where her true entrepreneurial spirit took off.  Hay also became the first female member of the Tittabawasee Boom Company.  She had three registered log marks with the company.  “For all of her efforts she was referred to as a “Pioneer resident” of Saginaw.”  She had nine children and they all lived in wealth and comfort.  She also put on lavish weddings for all of them.   She was way ahead of her time, a great mother and wife and has been remembered as such.
