Royal Oak is known for being in the center of metropolitan Detroit. A common statement is, “Royal Oak is twenty minutes away from anything.”  It is conveniently located off of two major interstate highways.  The city is quite eclectic.  The residential streets are filled with many different types of housing – from the original homesteads of the settlers to new modern homes.  Downtown features lofts, apartments, single family homes, shops, galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, theaters, and businesses.  The city is extremely walkable, and there are many places to sit and relax and watch the people and activity.

Many businesses have made Royal Oak their home base.  As of date, the number of businesses, either owned individually or by more than one person, exceeds 2,400. The diverse group includes law, health care, banking e-business and architecture firms.  Also, there are many dining, fitness, furniture, home products, grocery stores, sports and music retail shops.  The city also is host to many manufacturing businesses in the industrial parks that are spread around town.

The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, started in 1936, presently has 600 members.  The organization is dedicated to progressing the community forward into new ventures while helping maintain the relationship between professional and residential inhabitants.

In addition to the great downtown and peaceful residential streets, Royal Oak was named to the Top 100 list of safest cities in America by  Royal Oak was ranked 89th in cities with 25,000 or more residents.  The city was the only Michigan establishment on the list.

Last, Royal Oak ranked number 9 by Livability in 2014 for the 10 Best Cities for Kids nationwide.  The firm noted that the crime rate was far below the national average, high rated schools, a vibrant recreational sports program, a wide range of cultural and education programs offered and the over 50 city parks provided children a wonderful place to grow up.
