The city of Rochester was a part of Avon Township up until 1869, when at that point the residents decided to become their own village and later shifted to city status. During the first three decades of its settlement, Avon Township was home to almost 1,500 residents. Today, that area has grown to nearly 84,000, but only approximately 12,000 are Rochester residents, as Rochester is significantly smaller than Rochester Hills.
Downtown Rochester is the most well known area of the city, and is a popular shopping destination for the residents of Rochester. Many popular clothing stores and restaurants are located on Main Street. For a taste of good sushi, there is Sumo Sushi and Seafood, which has the best sushi in the area for a reasonable price. A little further down Main Street is the Bean and Leaf Cafe, if you’re looking for a pick-me-up of tea or coffee. Just past the downtown area is the Rochester Hills Public Library. Rochester and Rochester Hills, being the former Avon Township, are neighboring cities and share many areas today. Rochester Adams High School is in fact located in Rochester Hills, and takes in many students from the two cities, among handful of other areas as well.
Another popular area in Rochester is the Rochester Municipal Park. Located just past Main Street, Paint Creek runs right through the park, as does the Paint Creek Trail. The Rochester Community House, on the western side of the park, is a place for those in the community to host events and meetings, such as weddings, receptions, birthday parties, and business meetings. Fall is particularly a popular time for events, with the changing of the leaves creating a beautiful backdrop for any wedding or reception.
Another important landmark in the community is Oakland University. Oakland University, once a part of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, has its address in Rochester, but is in fact located in between the city lines of Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, just to the west of Rochester.
