Portland, City of Two Rivers

DSC04378 (2) Portland is a small town that lies about halfway between Grand Rapids and Lansing. It is located in Ionia county and the southern portion of Portland township. A small town of around 4,000 residents, the town is a very rural, and the predominantly white community consists of mainly German heritage. The farmers harvest crops such as corn. sugar beets, wheat, soybeans, and even pickles. The town manages to even have some manufacturing, with Portland Products and TRW producing automotive parts. The geography of the town is quiet hilly and lies in the valley carved by the town’s two rivers. The town was built in the intersection of the Looking Glass and the Grand River, giving Portland the namesake of “City of Two Rivers.”
