According to the 2010 United States Census, Okemos has a population of 21,369 people in a community that spans an area of 16.9 square miles. The center of Okemos is referred to by many as “The Four Corners,” which is located at the intersection of Hamilton and Okemos Roads. Okemos is a relatively diverse town. The census lists Okemos as 76.5 percent White, 14.4 percent Asian, 5.1 percent African American and 3 percent Latino. Okemos is a relatively affluent suburb of Lansing, with a median household income of $67,802 in 2012. Okemos is the hometown of Google co-founder and CEO, Larry Page. In 2011, CNN Money Magazine rated Okemos as the 12th-best city to live in for “the rich and single.
The Okemos Public Schools are nationally acclaimed and are regarded for the superior academic performance of students. The public school system is comprised of 4 elementary schools, one 5-6-grade building, one 7-8-grade building and one high school. The high school mascot is the Chiefs as an honor to ChiefJohn Okemos. Okemos high school is one of the most highly regarded public high schools in the state. In the US News’ 2012 list of the best high schools in America, Okemos high school was ranked 4th in the state and 392nd nationally.
My Family and Okemos
My family moved from Lansing to Okemos in 2003 mostly for the Okemos Public School District. We currently live in the Briarwood subdivision located of off Okemos Road. Both my sister and I are graduates of Okemos High School.
