For such a small town that Mason is, folks may be surprised to know that much of the foam cups and other forms of disposable containers they use have their origins in Mason. Dart Container, known locally simply as Dart (despite the Dart Banks around the area that have familial connections), is a well known international corporation. It had its humble origins in 1937 as a small machine shop, making all sorts of goods for the armed forces (Dart). Experimentation with with expandable polystyrene in the late 1950s though would lead Dart Manufacturing into the foam cup industry, and subsequently a name change as it began to focus on container products and became the largest of its kind in the world.
Over the decades, Dart Container has produced so many variations of disposable cups, dining ware, food containers of the sort you get from a restaurant or fast food chain, and even lids for their cups. Also along the way were expansions into new facilities across the United States and abroad. Nevertheless, Dart Container retains its Mason home grounds, and recently has expanded it facilities in Mason, sure to attract more workers to its lines. I imagine that for residents of Mason today, it is hard to imagine life without Dart Container, for generations have grown up using its products, working in its facilities, or driving past its headquarters everyday. I for one was raised on Dart products, and my first job involved its products as well. It may seem mysterious to folks who have little interaction with it other than its products, but for Mason it is a standing legacy of American achievement.
