Mason was first settled in 1836 by one Lewis Lacey.  His purpose for settling in what would become Mason was to clear 20 acres of land for the construction of a saw mill on Sycamore Creek (Cortez).  He worked for Noble and Co. of Monroe.  Said mill would become the first saw mill in the county (Cortez).  The company would two years later construct the first grist-mill in the county as well (Cortez).
