Small Businesses, Lasting Impacts

If you were to ask a longtime resident of Holt about some of the most long-lasting and notable business in the area, it would come as a shock if they did not mention Brower’s Food and Hardware. After moving to Holt in 1954, John Brower entered into the frozen food industry by creating Jane’s Barbeque (named after his wife, Jane), a small business ran from his home. One year later, Brower would purchase the freezer space needed to house a larger operation. As the years passed by Jane’s Barbeque would grow to having several distributors across the state and the business continued to flourish. The business was so successful that there were offers to take the business on the national level but Brower would eventually decline, leaving it’s small business title intact. In 2014 the business was sold by Brower family and would close down. While one would think two businesses would be enough to manage, but that did not stop the DeRosa family from building their own Dairy Parlor. Originally know as J.D’s Dairy Delight, it would eventually be renamed “Sweet Sensations” in the following years to which it still stands and operates to this day.
