The Ionia Free Fair is Ionia’s proudest tradition. In July of 2015, the fair celebrated 100 years. The brainchild of the mayor of Ionia, Fred Green, welcomed upward of 20,000 visitors, who attended exhibits, observed various displays, and watched competitions ranging from airplane flights, balloon ascensions and parachute drops during the first four-day fair. Now the fair is home to 4-H members and their animals, craft shows, rides, fair food, and entertainment shows. As one of the “longest running outdoor events,” the Ionia Free Fair is a proud tradition in Ionia that will continue on.
