The Pottawattamie indians first called Grand Haven, Gabagouache. This was before any Europeans traveled to Grand Haven. Even when the french inhabited Grand Haven, they still called Grand Haven, Gabagouache. That was until 1835 when they decided to change the name to Grand Haven because of how beautiful it was along with how close it was to the mouth of the Grand River.
