Grosse Pointe consists of five communities. They include: The City of Grosse Pointe Woods, The City of Grosse Pointe Farms, The City of Grosse Pointe Park, The Village of Grosse Pointe Shores and The City of Grosse Pointe. A family-friendly community, Grosse Pointe is commonly referred to as the “Pointes” by those who reside there. It is bordered by Lake St. Clair to the east and to the south. The street that runs the shore of Lake St. Clair is commonly known as Lakeshore Drive. Prior to its first settlers, Grosse Pointe was made up of densely wooded areas, consisting of mainly swampy and rolling terrain. Parts of Grosse Pointe saw its first settlers as early as 1740, where it started off as a farming, hunting and trading community. In later years it became a summer resort destination for wealthy City of Detroit residents of French descent. Unfortunately, it is unknown how Grosse Pointe received its name.
