I lived and went to school in East Grand Rapids from kindergarten all the way through high school. EGR is a great place to live. There is plenty to do from going out on Reed’s Lake to hanging out at Jersey Junction, the local ice cream store. There five public schools with sports fields to play pick up, ten parks and natural areas to have a picnic, play tennis or volleyball, take a walk, or throw a frisbee around. There are also many running, walking, and biking trails including the Reed’s Lake Trail around the lake at the center of the town. There’s John Collins, Manhattan, Waterfront, Remington, and Griffith’s Parks as well as the Hodenpyl Woods. These are all busy with the people staying active at each location. In 2012, EGR was voted number eight in “Best Place to Live for Suburbanites” in the US as well as number one in Michigan. This is the hometown of former president Gerald R. Ford and Chris Van Allsburg, the author and illustrator of “The Polar Express” and “Jumanji.” EGR was also rated fifth in greatest cities to raise your kids.
