Adrian College formed as a result of the merging of two methodist institutions in Leoni, Michigan. Wesleyan Methodists merged with another methodist school in 1855 to form the Michigan Union College. In 1859 the College was moved to Adrian and was charted by the Michigan Legislature as Adrian College under the guidance of first president Asa Muhan. Adrian College was to be a private, co-educational college of science and liberal arts that was related to the United Methodist church. During the Civil War Adrian College acted as a base for Union regiments to form in Michigan. Adrian College has continued to grow over the years and recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Today the college has an enrollment of 1654 undergraduate students. It recently underwent significant upgrades across the campus. Some of the improvements were to the athletic facilities, including a new football stadium, new ice arena, as well as indoor facilities for the baseball and softball teams. Other upgrades were made to dorms and cafeterias across campus. Adrian College is a fine academic institution, it was recently named the number one up and coming baccalaureate universities in the midwest by US News and World Report.(adrian.edu)
