Rochester: Today

The city of Rochester was a part of Avon Township up until 1869, when at that point the residents decided to become their own village and later shifted to city status. During the first three decades of its settlement, Avon Township was home to almost 1,500 residents. Today, that area has grown to nearly 84,000.

Downtown Rochester is the most well known area of the city, and is a popular shopping destination for the residents of Rochester. Many popular clothing stores and restaurants are located on Main Street. Just past the downtown area is the Rochester Hills Public Library. Rochester and Rochester Hills, being the former Avon Township, are neighboring cities and share many areas today. Rochester Adams High School is in fact located in Rochester Hills, and takes in many students from the two cities, among handful of other areas as well.

Oakland University, once a part of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, has its address in Rochester, but is in fact located in between the city lines of Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, just to the west of Rochester.
